It's out

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 1, 2007, 9:36 PM
Last week Uncharted Drake's Fortune for PS3 was released.

It took two and a half years to make this videogame.I was lucky enough to join the development team at Naughtydog seven months ago. The game is expansive, fun and beautiful. It does not have a ton of press behind it like Halo but people who have played it so far have really enjoyed it. I only had a very small part in making it happen. I did textures for props and background environments for two levels. I also did some play testing. Now that it is out, I get to post some of my work. No photos were use in the creating these textures. Textures were painted in z-brush and photoshop. I hope the environments seem inviting and that you might want to run around and find some treasures in them(while fighting off pirates). Here is another link if you are interested in more about the game. If not just look at the pretty pictures:)www.deeko.com/ps3/reviewDetail…

Now I finally have time to make some more of my own art. Hooray!

Have a great art filled weekend:> Here is a trailer of Drake's Fortune the game I'm making a few textures for if your interested:www.naughtydog.com/comingsoon/…

Gee, I absolutely adored the art direction in this game. I knew I bought my HDTV for something! It was amazing to see such love poured into the environments, the animation, story and characters. I'm completely in love with this game. :)

Amazingly fun game too. Thanks for helping to bring such an awesome experience for me. :)

yep, we were so lucky to have directors that gave the artist an idea to work in but then let us do our own thing. It kept the art fresh and inspired. The game play is out of the artist hands but it is the most important part and I was so happy to see the level designers and programers put their best efforts forward.

It is truly an amazing game. Personally I was astounded at the level of...uniqueness it held. You know, it felt as though you were always in a distinctly different area as you moved through the game (no rehashed repeats or anything), animations were fluid and had a huge variety. It felt real you know. I was surprised at the amount of attention was put into keeping it that way. Even though the work looked hard, the workplace looked fun (cute dog). I know you were there for only a short time, but where you included in the extras (i.e. the pics of the studio or something)?

I could have been but I made sure I wasn't around when they were filming. They still managed to get my feet in during the yoga class:)Pogo the dog is cute and a little rascal. She is always trying to dig through our garbage cans looking for treats while we work.

congrats! it looks like a fun game. game trailers said it was the best looking console game to date. i've been admiring it for awhile, but i keep forgetting to mention it to you. the main dude reminds me of Isaac for some reason.

there are so many awesome big honker games out right now. i hope it does well and doesn't get lost in the crowd. if only i had a ps3...

it's insane how high budget and good looking games are getting.

i'm curious why you didn't use photos and did it all in zbrush? was that just a personal preference or was that a mandate from the higher ups?

it'd be cool to see some of the textures themselves (normal, diffuse, spec, etc...). if naughty dog will let us see em.

oh, and congrats to shaunie too! i saw his name in the credits for the Clive Barker's Jericho opening cinematic (probably the only good part of the game).

hope you guys are doing well. sorry to be such a stranger...

Thanks for the well wishes Chrisick- Nice to hear for you. To answer your Q's Naughtydog wanted a painterly, exaggerated realism look for the game. They did a lot of research on what looks really good on the playstion3 and notices photos had to much noise. It's alot more work to paint them but I think they look so much better. I'll have to ask if I can put up an example I might be able to put up something that didn't get used. Shaun is doing fantastic. He even got one of his 3d models in the december issue of Playboy!!- Miss you -Coley

it's always nice to see games go for a stylized look. have you seen the Street Fighter 4 video? wholly crap does that look awesome.

wow, Shaun's model in playboy, that's awesome!

In an unrelated event: i was talking to Rebeca today and she reminded me about the time we were all playing Cranium and you were trying to hum a song. you started crying because you were laughing so hard.
