testing,testing,read all about it

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 6, 2007, 11:47 PM
I gots me a job.

It's for a wonderful game company in Santa Monica called Naughty Dog. They hired me on as an environmental texture artist starting next week for the game: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune.

If you are looking for work as an artist, the video game  industry is growing exponentially but companies are also having more and more requirements to get your foot in the door. Besides having a nice demo reel or website, you have to take a test that requires a week of doing artwork for free before you even get an interview.

I was lucky and only did two test before I got an interview but I heard of people doing 7 before getting to see an actual person. That is 7 weeks of working for free living off noodles. If you do get an interview it is usually 2-3 hours long with 4-5 people asking you technical goo and possibly preform a task in front of them. Talk about performance anxiety ---- Yowsa!

Still it is all worth it if you love making art for a living. Painting a 3-d environment that you can walk around virtually is quite a trip.

Have a great art filled weekend:> Here is a trailer of Drake's Fortune if your interested:www.naughtydog.com/comingsoon/…

Congrats.

tests huh? I've been on a games art course at uni for almost 2 years now and noones ever mentioned tests. I wonder if its just an american thing.

I'm still not sure which direction i want to go in vis a vis the industry personally. I'm growing to really enjoy texturing, but i also kinda want to do stuff with conceptualising too D:

I am really sure you could do it- it just would be difficult in the beginning. Once you have the job it gets much easier

You can do it if I can do it- I hate computers most of the time so it seems extra scary for me dealing with the tech stuff

Yee!!!! I am SO jealous!!! I recently decided thats what I want to do too, and I've contacted about 30 game companies so far (in the last few months) with no good leads.
I do however need to develop my digital gallery a bit I believe.

Hey, Congratulations and Good luck with it all! Its gonna kick ass!!!! if you have any advice where to start or who to contact, I'll give you a buscuit. :XD:

I tried sending an email - but it got sent back, failing. I must have the wrong one, if you could send a mail to zyphryus @ gmail . com (minus the spaces) I could get the right email! :)
or you could just say the beginning of the email here. either way!
Thanks again!

I don't think you have to test for a graphic design position do you? I think they want to see a polished portfolio. But I hear the deadlines are pretty tough for that job too

That sounds tough :o

I've only had 1 interview so far (:slow:) aside from mock ones at school, but that lasted less than 10 minutes.
